The Larrakia people established the first trade routes in the region, trading with the Tiwi, Wagait, and Wulna people as well as with Indonesian fishermen.
In the 1800s British settlers arrived in Darwin. Over time, Chinese arrived to work mines, market gardens and to build the railway, Japanese came to dive for pearl shells, Greek sponge divers were followed by many others from near and far and were welcomed to Darwin.
Today, Darwin is a vibrant multicultural city with 32 percent of the population born overseas.
