The Ghan

End of the Line

There are many ways to get to Darwin and one way is by train.

The Ghan has a long history of service to Alice Springs but has only been able to travel to Darwin since completion of the track in 2004. In the very early days the rail line extended from Adelaide north but ended short of Alice Springs. Camel trains were use to cart goods the final leg to Alice Springs.

While there are differing views on how the train got its name there is no doubt the Afghan cameleers played some part.

Today the Ghan is a luxury holiday experience and identified as one of the world’s great rail trips.
