New Lifestyle in Darwin

How moving for a new job sparked an investment into Darwin city

In October 2019, Will Grundy was about to embark on a decision that would change his life as he knew it - moving to Darwin.

After working with Deloitte in Sydney for a few years, Will was looking for an adventure.

Excited by the prospect of a different type of work, and what he knew of Darwin and the lifestyle that living here affords you - he says the decision to move was an easy one.

“Fat Tuna opened in October 2021, although I was plotting away on it a bit before then... Having worked in Darwin CBD, I would usually go to the same few places for lunch. I saw a need for something fresh, light, and healthy. I’ve always wanted to do my own thing, so a healthy dose of naivety, and belief in my idea set things in motion.”

After seeking help from the NT Small Business Champions, Will saw first hand how supportive the state and local governments in Darwin are for local business.

“At the end of the day, it's up to you what you will do with the help, but all agencies I have dealt with in getting Fat Tuna started have been professional, available, and super useful.”

Will is no stranger to the opportunities Darwin affords you if you choose to invest in it - He once had the Chief Minister hold a press conference from within the venue!

“We get excellent exposure in Darwin. Getting to serve, chat, and meet with Ministers, doing TV and radio interviews, and featuring in the paper are some of the experiences I wouldn't have considered possible a year ago - and I've been very fortunate and grateful for them.

Acknowledging that the lifestyle is one of the hardest things to top - Will has a message for people looking to invest and build a business in Darwin: “Give it a go! If you have an idea, big or small, the best time to get started on it was yesterday. Then the next best time is today. It could be as simple as shooting off an email, making that phone call, enquiring about a lease, or getting a website built. You won't regret having a go, though you could regret it if you don't!"
