    Advanced manufacturing

    Darwin is becoming Australia’s advanced manufacturing hub. Darwin has sufficient space to grow, and a number of innovative projects have set up their home in Darwin.
     
    The Northern Territory Government has partnered with the Federal Government’s Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre to fast-track innovative projects, which provide great potential for the investors to enter the advanced manufacturing sector.

    Darwin’s major Advanced Manufacturing projects include:

    • Advanced Manufacturing Alliance between Charles Darwin University and SPEE3D 
    • A momentous partnership of the new aircraft manufacturing in Darwin between Amphibian Aerospace Industries and Northern Territory Government
    • Darwin Ship Lift Facility development which is the largest ship lift in Northern Australia


    Businesses and projects that provide either innovative products or advanced  knowledge, advanced processes or advanced business models to assist the growth of our industries, for example renewable energy, mining and resource, oil and LNG, space industry, environment, and healthcare.

    The Northern Territory Government provides $7.5 million to build the advanced manufacturing ecosystem in the Northern Territory. The fund aims to build the capability and increase investment in and output of advanced manufacturing activities in the Northern Territory.     Creative industries

    Darwin boasts a wealth and diversity of arts, culture, entertainment and heritage. The Creative Industries sector in Darwin contributed $469 million to the Darwin economy in 2020/21.
     
    The sector continues to emerge with abundant opportunities in the traditional and contemporary arts and entertainment sector. Theatre, film, dance and music are embraced by skilled and talented local artists and musicians.

    Indigenous art including painting, carving, ceramic, fibre and fashion are on display at locally owned and run art centres. Galleries are popular with visitors from both home and abroad.

    The screen industry in Darwin is small in scale and has tremendous unfulfilled potential. The City aims to develop a vibrant screen industry as part of the creative industries strategy with support and funding opportunities from Screen Territory.

    Food and agribusiness

    There is great potential for growth in Darwin’s Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing industries, including tropical fruit plantations and the expansion of aquaculture fisheries, providing things like sustainable fresh seafood and pearl farming.

    The total contribution of the Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing industries to the Darwin economy was $168 million in the 2019/20 financial year.

    Opportunities for investors

    Opportunities for investors include, but are not limited to:

    • Aquaculture Fisheries and product exports around the Darwin coastal areas (Pearl Farms, Barra Farms, etc.)
    • Commercial fishing (dominated by barramundi but also salmon, shark, snapper and other reef species, mud crab, prawns and trepang)
    • Flora and Fauna Aquaculture and product exports (Bees and Honey, Crocodile Farms and Leather, Tropical Fruit Plantations)


     

    International education

    Darwin offers Australian higher education, vocational education and training, English language, and secondary schooling. 

    The international exports of the Education and Training sector in Darwin is worth over $27.6 million in 2019/20. The whole sector provides 4,816 jobs for Darwin in 2019/20.

    Services

    Darwin is the service centre for the defence, energy and resources sectors in the Northern Territory. The service sector in Darwin values $6,053 million in 2020. The sector has provided enormous business opportunities for investors and businesses. Among this, the strong defence presence and capabilities of the region are expected to continue for decades. With the rapid changes in the global strategic environment, the Australian Government is investing a historic $270 billion into Defence spending through the 2020 Defence Strategic update and Force Structure Plans.
     
    The mining sector in the Northern Territory is valued at over $8.6 billion. The most important mineral resources in the Northern Territory are bauxite, uranium, lead, copper, gold, silver, phosphate, and rare earth, zinc, as well as manganese, and many others.

    • For example, software development, precision manufacturing, and specialist engineering for the defence industry
    • Service and supply chain opportunities for the energy and resources
    • Industrial development and manufacturing for the energy and resources

    Tourism

    Darwin is perfectly positioned in the centre of 500 million people within a five-hour flight radius. The industry has successfully established attractions and services to draw international, domestic, and business travellers to the region, which leverage these natural assets.
     
    Tourism in Darwin has enormous scope to expand, and the area is brimming with tourism-related investment and business opportunities.

    • Tourism product diversification and development 
    • Tourism Output Value: $919.9 million
    • Tourism Employment: 3,512
    • Average Domestic Overnight: 4.9 nights
    • Average Spend per trip per domestic visitor: $1,235
    • Average International Overnight: 11.9 nights
    • Average Spend per trip per international visitor: $992
